Rev. Dr. Tom Sherwood

Tom was born in Newmarket, but grew up in Asbury and West United Church in Toronto, teaching Sunday School from age 14, becoming an elder at 18.  After an M.A. at Carleton University and working at the House of Commons, he attended Emmanuel College and TST. Tom est arrivé au Synode M&O la première fois en 1974 alors qu'il était pasteur-étudiant á Grand'mère, Trois-Rivières et Saint-Damase dans la Zone Pastorale (maintenant Consistoire Laurentien).  He was ordained by Toronto Conference in 1976, transferred to M&O, and settled in the Ottawa Presbytery.  He has never left.  After four years at Osgoode-Kars and a four-year PhD at Carleton, Tom served as minister of Orléans United Church (1984-1999) and Carleton Ecumenical Chaplain (1999-2009). 

In 2009 he was appointed McGeachy Senior Scholar, and commissioned to undertake a study of young adult spirituality, "Listening to The Echo."  He has taught "Religion and Society" courses and supervised graduate students at Carleton and Saint Paul University since 1982.  And after a career of playing and coaching team sports, he is now a certified fitness leader at Carleton. 

Tom and Lorena have together raised four children who have moved out, but still get their mail at the family home in Old Ottawa South.  They enjoy two family retreats, both former churches: a former Free Methodist church near Bancroft where Lorena was born (it was her father's first church) and a former United Church in Sunny Brae, Nova Scotia.

Pasteur Tom Sherwood

Né à Newmarket, Tom a grandi à Toronto, en tant que membre de la paroisse Asbury and West United Church où il a commencé à enseigner à l'école du dimanche à l'âge de 14 ans. À 18 ans, il devenait ancien à cette paroisse. Après avoir obtenu une maîtrise de l'Université Carleton et travaillé à la Chambre des Communes, il étudie au Emmanuel College et au Toronto School of Theology.  Tom est arrivé au Synode M&O la première fois en 1974 alors qu'il était pasteur-étudiant à Grand-Mère, Trois-Rivières et Saint-Damase, situés dans la Zone Pastorale (maintenant Consistoire Laurentien). Il fut ordonné par le Synode de Toronto en 1976, puis transféré au Synode M&O où il s'établit dans le Consistoire d'Ottawa qu'il n'a jamais quitté. Après quatre ans à Osgoode-Kars et quatre ans à compléter son doctorat à l'Université Carleton, Tom a servi en tant que pasteur au Orléans United Church (1984-1999) et aumônier œcuménique à l'Université Carleton (1999-2009).

Titulaire d'un McGeachy Senior Scholarship en 2009, il produit une étude sur la spiritualité des jeunes adultes intitulée " Listening to The Echo ". Depuis 1982, il enseigne sur le thème " Religion et société " aux universités Carleton et Saint-Paul d'Ottawa où il est aussi superviseur d'étudiants aux études supérieures. Après avoir participé en tant qu'athlète et instructeur de sports d'équipe, Tom est maintenant instructeur de conditionnement physique certifié à Carleton.

Tom et Lorena ont élevé quatre enfants qui ont quitté la maison familiale située dans le Vieux-Ottawa-Sud où ils y reçoivent toujours leur courrier.
Tom et Lorena sont aussi propriétaires de deux maisons de campagne (deux anciennes églises). La première église appartenait à l'Église méthodiste libre et est située près de Bancroft où Lorena est née (c'était l'église où son père était pasteur). L'autre église appartenait à l'Église Unie et est située à Sunny Brae, Nouvelle-Écosse.
