President's Report

As Advent approaches, our congregations, missions, chaplaincies and youth ministries will soon embark on a pilgrimage of sorts … to Bethlehem. It is a time of waiting, and a time of wonder. It is also a busy time of church calendars filled to the brim, of excitement and good cheer, as we ponder and celebrate the miraculous - the celebration of the birth of Jesus in our world.
The question that bears asking is this: When he arrives, will there be room in the inns of our hearts for him, or will we over-schedule and over-extend ourselves to the point where there is no time or space left for us to recognize God with us?

| Bien chers amis, Voila déjà deux semaines que l'Assemblée annuelle du Synode est derrière nous mais nous sommes encore pleins de son atmosphère de réflexion, de célébration et de réjouissance, et qui nous inspirera pour toute l'année qui vient. Que nous sachions dorénavant mieux vivre des relations plus justes avec toute la Terre. Si l'Esprit de Vie et de Joie y a soufflé abondamment, c'est un peu beaucoup grâce à vous. En tant que président de cette Assemblée qu'il me soit permis de vous remercier le plus profondément possible de votre inestimable contribution. Sans votre dévouement et votre générosité cette Assemblée annuelle n'aurait pas été ce qu'elle a été et la vie de notre Synode n'aurait pas été enrichie comme elle l'a été. Le témoignage de l'Évangile dans le monde d'aujourd'hui ne peut se faire que par une communauté vivante, et vous avez été, dans un rôle ou dans un autre, partie intégrante de cette communauté. Dear friends, Two weeks have passed since the M & O Conference AGM but we are still full of its spirit of reflection, celebration and joyfullness, and this will inspire us for the year to come. Let us involve ourselves, from now on, in Living in Right Relations with all the Earth. If the Spirit of Life and Joy abundantly blew trough AGM, it is without doubt because of you. As the president of this Assembly, let me mostly deeply thank you for your impressive contribution. Without your dedication and your generosity, this AGM would not have been what it was and the life of our Conference would not have been enriched the way it was. Witnessing the Gospel in the world today is to be done by a living community, and each one of you, in your own role, was an essential part of this community. Again : Thank you. Upcoming visit in M & O Conference !
Mardi Tindal, well-known communicator and media person, was elected moderator of the United Church at the General Council in Kelowna, B. C., in August 2009. At that time she was director of Five Oaks, a United Church formation and spiritual animation center, “a sacred place which bears witness to an alternative: an opportunity to listen to the owls, commune with the trees and foxes, and play in the snow. Such experiences led to a deeper connection with creation, with the divine, and with self.”
She has already visited in our Conference, for instances to preside at a solidarity and fund-raising worship for Haiti at St.James United Church after the terrible earthquake that devastated that country in January 2010.

De la grande visite ! Mardi Tindal est l’actuelle modératrice de l’Église unie. Communicatrice de formation, elle était, au moment de son élection lors du Conseil général de Kelowna (en Colombie-Britannique) en août 2009, directrice du Centre Five Oaks, un centre de formation et d’animation spirituelle de l’Église unie. Depuis elle est déjà venue quelques fois dans notre synode notamment en février dernier pour présider une cérémonie religieuse de collecte de fonds et de solidarité envers Haïti organisée par le consistoire de Montréal après le terrible tremblement de terre qui a dévasté de pays. |

Une Assemblée annuelle plus verte. Le Comité de planification de l’Assemblée annuelle du Synode travaille d’arrache-pied dans la préparation d’un programme des plus intéressants (conférenciers invités, ateliers, musique, présentation des rapports, etc). Mais il désire aussi donner une couleur (verte) la plus écologique possible; ceci afin de refléter le thème choisi notre rendez-vous de cette année : Vivre des relations justes avec toute la Terre. Et vous pouvez aussi voir que la présentation notre site internet a été modifiée pour le refléter. La crise écologique n’est pas, n’est plus à nos portes : elle se déroule sous nos yeux ! The AGM (Annual General Meeting) Planning Committee is working very hard in setting-up the most interesting program possible in the choice of guest speakers, workshops, music leadership, reports, etc., highlighting environmental issues and the “greening” in the most possible ways our AGM, following with this year’s theme : Living in Right Relations with all the Earth. And you can see that the front page of our website was changed to illustrate it. The ecological crisis is not at our doorstep any more: it is here, in front of us. And “it is here to stay » ! In 2011 : Rejoice ! During holidays between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, I had the chance to watch a performance of Handel’s Messiah on television. It is always a real pleasure for the ears and the heart to listen in awe to this musical masterpiece re-telling the birth, the resurrection and the coming of the Lord. |
En 2011 : Se réjouir ! Pendant le congé des Fêtes, peut-être êtes-vous plusieurs comme moi à avoir écouté la présentation du Messie de Händel à la télévision. C’est toujours un plaisir pour les oreilles et le cœur d’entendre avec admiration ce chef-d’œuvre de la musique racontant la naissance, la résurrection et le retour du Christ. |
